They will have seen and heard of many accidents and injuries caused by poor trailer design.<\/p><p align=\"left\">I have yet to see a trailer that has no design faults <strong>from the horse&#8217;s point of view.<\/strong> That&#8217;s not to say they are bad trailers &#8211; the construction is often top quality, but as with most things to do with horses, the human&#8217;s needs are put first and the safety of the horse suffers.<br \/>There are probably many more features that I have not included here on both the safe and unsafe lists so if you can alert me in order to help others, please do.<\/p><h4><strong>Good Features<\/strong><\/h4><div align=\"left\">This centre divider can be safely fixed open (hole in the floor) so a horse can be given more room to balance when travelling alone &#8211; an extra clip might be needed to join the two breeching chains when the divider is not centred as loose chains rattle and can bump a horse&#8217;s hind legs when cornering.<\/div><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/FloatDivider.jpg\" alt=\"FloatDivider\" width=\"300\" height=\"535\" \/><\/p><p>This is a better place to have a head divider &#8211; it stops the horses from getting their heads caught behind the centre roof support. Also having no divider in front of the chest bar enables the horse to balance better by moving its head and neck more freely.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FloatGuard.jpg\" alt=\"FloatHeadGuard\" width=\"400\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p><p>Window bars with narrow spacing can stop a horse from putting its head or hoof through the front window if panicked or thrown forward in an accident. Dark interior paint makes the inside look smaller and more claustrophobic.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatWindowBars.jpg\" alt=\"FloatWindowBars\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p><p>Good position of the spare tire so a rope can&#8217;t get caught under it, and filled in A-Frame towbar stops a horse putting a leg through if it tries to pass between the car and trailer.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatSpareTyreGood.jpg\" alt=\"FloatSpareTyreGood\" width=\"351\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p><p>A &#8216;Break-away&#8217; attachment activates the trailer brakes if the trailer detaches from the vehicle.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatBreakawayHitch.jpg\" alt=\"FloatBreakawayHitch\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p><p>A gas strut to hold the front door open is essential to stop the door from blowing shut and scaring or injuring a horse who may be looking out.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatDoorStrut.jpg\" alt=\"FloatDoorStrut\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p><p>This type of door latch folds away and stops the rope or halter from being caught on it.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatGoodHandle.jpg\" alt=\"FloatGoodHandle\" width=\"350\" height=\"389\" \/><\/p><p>Even rubber covered ramps can be slippery when wet so rubber strips help. The extra length of this ramp gives it a nice, gentle slope.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatRamp.jpg\" alt=\"FloatRamp\" width=\"366\" height=\"285\" \/><\/p><p>Having Tie-up points at the back makes more sense than tying horses separately on the sides where they can&#8217;t see each other and may worry. This ramp latch is relatively safe if kept folded down close to the trailer side.<\/p><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FloattieupRear1.jpg\" alt=\"FloattieupRear\" width=\"350\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>Good features to look for in a safe trailer\/float:<\/strong><\/h4><ul><li><p align=\"left\">Enough overall room for the horses you are towing<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Enough roof height for the horses you are towing<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Brakes that work &#8211; electric or over-ride<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Heavy duty (light truck) tyres<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Solid, sound flooring, preferably 2 layers of which one is steel<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Strong welding &amp; construction techniques<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Rust protection underneath &amp; around the front<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Good ventilation &#8211; especially in hot climates<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Removable dividers &#8211; head, chest, centre<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">A way to fix the centre divider open<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Height adjustable chest bar<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Centre pole guard<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Smooth edges on mudguards\/fenders<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Safely located tie-up points so rope can&#8217;t get caught<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Rear latches that a horse can&#8217;t get hooked on<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Removeable rump bars that open wide enough<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Fixed rubber matting on the floor and ramp<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Guard\/bars over large windows<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Multiple tie-up points inside &#8211; recessed near head position<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">A place to hang a feed bucket and tie a hay bag inside<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Padding on chest bar, centre divider and sides<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Padded roof supports so the roof doesn&#8217;t rattle<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Filled in A-frame towbar<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">A strut to keep the front door open<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Recessed latch on the front door<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Covered light fixtures<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Break-away wire to activate brakes<\/p><\/li><li><p align=\"left\">Rear upper door or tarp for dust or rain that can be kept open while travelling in hot weather.<\/p><\/li><li>A light interior colour (white) is preferred by horses and makes the float look more spacious.<\/li><li>An interior light for night travelling also helps when checking on the horses.<\/li><li>A wireless camera can also help to keep an eye on how they are travelling.<\/li><\/ul><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Undesirable\/Un-safe Features<\/span><\/h4><ul><li><div align=\"left\">Full-length solid centre divider &#8211; doesn&#8217;t allow horses to spread their legs for balance.<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">&#8216;Stallion&#8217; or head divider &#8211; also stops the horse from using its head and neck for balance. Better positioned tie-up points (to the side) can keep horses from bothering each other.<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">Spare tyre mounted near tie-up point &#8211; the lead rope can get hooked under it and cause a horse to pull back. it can move and slip, causing a horse to scramble while travelling.<\/p><p>Sharp edges on any part of the trailer (eg. at head height below)<br \/><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatSharpEdge.jpg\" alt=\"FloatSharpEdge\" width=\"350\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p><\/div><ul><li><div align=\"left\">Places a horse can get a leg\/hoof caught such as in the A-frame towbar, near the lights at the back or near the mudguards.<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">Fixed dividers &amp; chest bars &#8211; how do you release them if a horse falls?<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">Centre Divider rear post &#8211; horse rushing out can catch a leg.<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">Open A-frame tow bar &#8211; if the horse tries to pass between the trailer and vehicle, it can trap and break a leg.<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">Rear upper doors that can&#8217;t be removed\/kept open &#8211; dangerous to keep closed in the heat and maybe too claustrophobic for some horses.<\/div><\/li><li><div align=\"left\">Protruding chest bar adjustment &#8211; easy to injure a shoulder on this if you turn a sharp corner (eg. photo below).<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div align=\"center\"><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatBadDivider.jpg\" alt=\"FloatBadDivider\" width=\"400\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p><p>This type of chest bar pin (below) can easily catch a halter and cause a pullback.<\/p><\/div><div align=\"center\"><p><img title=\"Wrangler Jayne\u2019s Float Loading Made Easy - Natural Horse World\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/FloatBadPin.jpg\" alt=\"FloatBadPin\" width=\"300\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p><p>This rump bar doesn&#8217;t fully open so has to be removed before the horse comes out &#8211;
