- Natural Horse World\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"476\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DropNoseband.jpg\" alt=\"Drop Noseband\" class=\"wp-image-12898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DropNoseband.jpg 375w, https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DropNoseband-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Drop Noseband<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\nOf the three nosebands tested; the flash and drop nosebands showed significantly higher pressure on the front of the horse\u2019s nose as compared to a cavesson type.&nbsp; <strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dressagetoday.com\/lifestyle\/is-a-flash-noseband-necessary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flash<\/a> created the highest pressure.<\/strong>\n\nPeters says, \u201cAccording to initial findings; a common perception of restrictive noseband designs allowing a lighter rein aid may be inaccurate and warrant further investigation.\u201d\n\nAccording to the study, there was <strong>no significant change in rein tension<\/strong> when comparing the three nosebands.\n\nDetails of this eight-horse study:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Telerein tension gauge was used to calculate rein tension. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Pliance pressure system determined the amount of pressure caused by each noseband on the front of the horse\u2019s nose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All horses were fitted using the \u2018two-finger rule\u2019, checked with an ISES taper gauge for accuracy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The horses were ridden by their owner, in a snaffle bridle, for all three nosebands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img title=\"Would Your Horse\u2019s Noseband Pass the Pressure Test? - Natural Horse World\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"477\" height=\"499\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ISESTaperGuage-1.jpg\" alt=\"ISESTaperGuage\" class=\"wp-image-12893\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ISESTaperGuage-1.jpg 477w, https:\/\/naturalhorseworld.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ISESTaperGuage-1-287x300.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The ISES Taper Gauge is equivalent to 1 finger at the stop marker (1.5cm) to measure maximum noseband tightness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> This study raises equine welfare concerns when it comes to using nosebands with restrictive designs meant to prevent the horse from opening its mouth.&nbsp; With flash nosebands as the most prevalent design seen in international competition (46%) (Doherty et al., PloS One. 12:1, 2017), continuing investigation into potential damaging effects is needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISES council member, Kate Fenner agrees with the welfare concern relaying findings from her own study, \u201cRestrictive nosebands are a welfare concern as they can inhibit natural oral behaviour and cause stress.\u201d (Fenner et al., PloS One. 11:5, 2016). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internationally renowned researcher and co-founder of ISES,  Paul McGreevy has also studied restrictive nosebands citing they can cause stress and possible tissue damage (McGreevy et al., 2012).
