Bridle Comparison & Materials
Every LightRider bitless bridle works the same way. What differs is the headpiece, the noseband and the material. Here is how the styles and materials compare, so you can choose with confidence.

Styles
Style differences
The English, Stockhorse and Western styles all work the same way; the differences are in the headpiece and the details.
Headpiece
English
A single padded headpiece and a flat padded noseband in drum-dyed leather. Also available in Biothane. The English, Biothane and Western styles have a split, flexible headpiece so the browband is easy to move or change. The deluxe Biothane has a plaited horsehair browband and plain cheek pieces.
Headpiece
Western
A split, flexible headpiece with scalloped cheeks and a browband with silver conchos.
Headpiece
Stockhorse
Works like the English and Western styles, with a ring headpiece that lets the browband self-adjust its position, and a solid padded headpiece.
English leather
Euro, Dressage & Amalia
A single padded headpiece with a raised leather browband and noseband, made from high-quality English leather.
Sidepull
Amalia Western
A sidepull-style bridle made from high-quality vegetable-tanned leather.
Nosebands
Bitless Noseband & Euro Noseband
The Bitless Noseband has a flat noseband in regular leather or Biothane. The Euro Bitless Noseband has a raised noseband in English leather.
Rope
Performer & Knotless Riding Halter
Made from high-quality marine-grade polyester rope with an anti-gall padded noseband and stainless-steel rings.
Good to know
Gentle by design
LightRider bridles are among the gentlest bitless bridles available. Sensitive horses usually accept them readily, and they are still effective enough to control stronger horses with correct education.
What makes a LightRider different
The releasing chinstrap
All LightRider bitless bridles feature the unique chinstrap that snugs up when in use and releases when the pressure does, when fitted correctly. It won’t tighten or ‘clamp’ down on the horse, because the material folds around the noseband ring.
95% of the pressure is on top of the horse’s nose. The rope styles can also be used as a very gentle straight sidepull by clipping the noseband and chinstrap rings together.

Rope bridles
Why polyester rope?
Polyester is what marine ropes and climbing-rope sheaths are made from, for good reasons.
- Firm yet soft and durable, unlike the cheap polyethylene and polypropylene ropes sold in hardware stores. It won’t harden or break down with age, isn’t affected by water and resists rot, mould, mildew, most acids and oils.
- Cheap polypropylene halter cords and webbing have a much lower breaking strain (about 30% less) and lose another 30% a year through age. Polyester loses only 3% a year, so it can be relied on for much longer.
- Knots tied in polyester hold tight but can always be undone when you need to adjust.
- Fully washable: put it in the washing machine with normal household detergent in warm water.
- Colourfast, with only minor fading over the long life of the rope.
- Low abrasion. Polyester creates less friction, so there is a much lower chance of rope burn and less rubbing on your horse’s skin.
- The same material most marine ropes are made from, and used on the outside of climbing ropes to protect them from wear and UV light.
More about the material
BioThane® and Beta BioThane®
BioThane is nylon webbing covered with thermoplastic polyurethane, so it looks shiny. Beta BioThane® (often just “Beta”) is a newer version with a softer vinyl coating that isn’t as shiny, so it looks closer to leather and stays pliable with less maintenance than leather.
Both offer durability, abrasion resistance and flexibility, even in cold temperatures, and come in a wide variety of colours or realistic natural tones.
- Lightweight and easy to clean: just wipe with a damp cloth.
- Doesn’t absorb water, and resists chafing.
- Doesn’t crack or peel in heat or cold, and stays flexible over its lifetime.
- Forms to your horse with use, and should outlast and outperform both leather and nylon.
- It doesn’t chafe your horse, but it is slippery when wet.
